What method do you use to give your dresses that extra 'poof' so the skirts/bottom of your dress doesn't fall flat? I'm also curious how you can get your sleeves to be so big.

All my dresses have petticoats under neath. Many also have built-in petticoats in the dress/skirt lining, to give extra poof.

As for sleeves, medium weight fabrics give enough body so they look nice and puffy. If you want HUGE puffy sleeves though (like my Queen Victoria cosplay, [link]) you can gather netting or tulle and sew it inside the sleeve. Make sure to line it though, tulle is rather scratchy against your skin.

When it comes too the petticoat, do you often use tulle petticoats? After much looking around, many appear softer, as though a thinner fabric is used. For a dress collaboration between me and my friend, we're using tulles to give the dress that bell shape. I'm curious if this method is useful, or just time/money consuming.

when you say 'medium weighted fabrics', what kinds are you talking about. for the sleeves of the dress I'm working on, we're using cotton for the sleeves. I assume the fabric is too light to create 'huge' sleeves by it's self.

Sorry it took so long to respond! I've been so busy that deviantart has been getting ignored.

I do usually use a mixture of tulle and netting for my petticoats. This gives more volume. Tulle itself gives a softer shape.

Cotton for the sleeves should be alright. "Medium weight" refers to how thick the fabric is. A lighter weight fabric (if the cotton is thin) would need more gathering for the sleeves to have more volume.

If it's a thin cotton, and you want huge sleeves, I'd definitely suggest using tulle as well.

Hope that helps :)
